Local Author Dr. Colin Baxter to Talk about New Book at Johnson City Public Library
Dr. Colin Baxter will introduce his new book at the Johnson City Public Library on Wednesday, October 17 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Dr. Baxter’s book, The Secret History of RDX, tells the fascinating story of the secret super-explosive
substance, Research Department Explosive, code-named RDX.
RDX is a powder explosive that was manufactured near Kingsport, Tennessee during World War II. The explosive played a key role in the Allied victory. Utilizing archival records and interviews with people who worked at the Kingsport “powder plant”, Dr. Baxter illuminates both the military significance of the explosive and the impact of its production on the local community. More broadly, the book assesses the social and economic impact of the
military-industrial complex on small communities during World War II.
Dr. Baxter is an Emeritus Professor of History at ETSU.
