JOHNSON CITY – Johnson City Public Library (JCPL) will host its third LibCon on Saturday, June 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. LibCon III: Close Encounters of the Nerd Kind is a free sci-fi fandom convention that will include panels, games, trivia, food trucks, vendors, an art contest and a cosplay contest.
LibCon is the library version of Comic-Con, the popular comic and fandom convention. JCPL’s Jennifer Johnson believes that putting on a Comic-Con style event is a natural fit for the library. “At their core, these conventions are celebrations of beloved stories and they build a sense of community over shared interests,” both of which are integral elements in the work of libraries. However, while there are similarities to traditional fandom conventions, JCPL’s LibCon is also unique in that it is free and family-friendly. LibCon is designed to be an inclusive experience that allows people of all ages to be, as Johnson puts it, “their nerdiest selves.”
