Trauma-Informed Response Workshop

In September 2024, many across the region sustained traumatic loss due to catastrophic flooding and the effects of Hurricane Helene. Trauma also arises in many other ways, including experiences such as abuse, neglect, violence, the loss of a loved one, or chronic stress. These experiences, like natural disasters, have lasting effects on individuals, shaping their emotional well-being, relationships, and daily functioning. The impact of trauma can be seen in workplaces, classrooms, clinics, and churches, influencing how people learn, work, and interact with one another.

In this workshop, international presenter Becky Haas will discuss what trauma is, how to identify trauma, how trauma derails early childhood brain development, the significance of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study, and ways to build resilience. This workshop will also focus on defining SAMHSA's key principles for using a trauma-informed approach, addressing secondary trauma, and strategies for helping trauma survivors not only heal but flourish.

Becky Haas is an international advocate and trainer on using a trauma-informed approach and the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study. She is a pioneer in creating trauma-informed communities. Work she led in Northeast Tennessee while working for the Johnson City Police Department was recognized by SAMHSA in 2018 as a model for cities to follow. Becky authors sector-specific professional development training, with two receiving statewide accreditation in Tennessee as evidence-based training and one earning national accreditation. Among many accolades she has received, in 2022, she was awarded the Friends of Children Award by the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth for her statewide efforts to reduce the effects of childhood trauma.
